A passport renewal often starts with a holiday plan. You check the expiry date, realise there is less time left than you thought, and start wondering whether you can renew it while living in the UK.

For Indian citizens, the UK process normally means applying for a passport reissue through the overseas Passport Seva portal, preparing the documents for your circumstances and attending a VFS appointment. The Indian High Commission or relevant consulate handles the passport decision.

This guide covers Indian passport renewal in the UK for adults. Children, lost passports and changes to personal details need their own supporting documents. The official pages linked below were checked on 5 October 2026.

When can you renew an Indian passport in the UK?

The High Commission's passport FAQs say you can apply for reissue when fewer than 12 months of validity remain. Reissue is also available for reasons such as exhausted pages, changes in personal details, loss or damage.

Start by checking your next journey rather than only the expiry date. The destination may require remaining passport validity beyond your stay. Leave space in your plans for the application, any further checks and the return of your documents.

If you have acquired British or another foreign citizenship, check the Indian passport surrender requirements instead of following an ordinary renewal route.

Where should you apply?

Your UK address determines the relevant consular jurisdiction. VFS directs applicants to the London, Birmingham or Edinburgh mission as appropriate. Check the current jurisdiction instructions before selecting a mission on the application form or booking a centre.

Use the VFS India passport services page for UK applicants as your starting point. Choose the passport service you need, rather than an Indian visa or OCI appointment.

Being able to reach a particular centre easily does not establish that it is the right one for your application. Check that point first; it can save you a wasted journey.

Documents for Indian passport renewal in the UK

For a standard adult application, work through the VFS adult passport checklist and the High Commission's adult reissue guidance. Gather:

  • Your appointment confirmation and completed online application printout.
  • Your current Indian passport and the required copies of its identity, address, endorsement and visa pages.
  • Evidence of your UK immigration status, including your eVisa and share code where applicable.
  • Two recent ICAO-compliant photographs. The linked VFS adult checklist specifies 35mm x 45mm on a white background, matching the uploaded image.
  • Annexure E and any further forms required for your application.
  • Current UK address evidence as required by the applicable instructions.
  • Supporting evidence for any requested change, such as an Indian address change or spouse details.

Take originals and self-attested copies in the requested order. The adult checklist advises uploading your photograph, signature and supporting documents before the appointment.

Check the exact documents for your circumstances. For example, marriage, divorce, a changed surname or an unavailable original passport can alter the requirements. The authorities can request additional evidence.

How to apply: the UK renewal process

1. Complete the overseas Passport Seva application

Follow the official link to the Global Passport Seva portal for Indian missions. Select the relevant mission and reissue service, then enter the details from your existing passport carefully.

Before submitting, compare names, dates, addresses and passport details across the form and supporting documents. If you are requesting a change, make sure you have the evidence for it.

2. Prepare your uploads and printed documents

Follow the portal instructions for uploads, then print the completed application. An online form is part of the process; it does not replace the required in-person submission.

Read the checklist once before gathering documents and again when the file is complete. Keep your application reference somewhere you can find it without searching through emails.

3. Book and attend the correct appointment

Use the appointment route linked from the official UK passport guidance. Bring your confirmation, application, originals, copies and the required payment arrangements.

The High Commission's guidance requires applicants, including minors, to submit in person for identification. It also says the existing passport is retained during processing, so plan around being without it.

4. Follow the application and return arrangements

Keep the submission receipt. Use the official tracking instructions provided for your application, and respond to any request for further information. Confirm the return arrangements at submission rather than assuming you can collect whenever you wish.

Indian passport renewal fees in the UK

The High Commission's fee schedule effective from 1 July 2026 lists these charges for ten-year passports:

ServiceListed passport fee
Normal adult passport, 36 pages£93
Normal adult passport, 60 pages£130
Tatkaal passport, 36 pages£185
Tatkaal passport, 60 pages£222

These are passport fees, not an all-inclusive quote. The schedule excludes ICWF charges; confirm the applicable VFS service charge, delivery costs and any optional services separately. Other categories, including minors and lost or damaged passports, have different fees.

Check the current schedule before paying. Older fee tables remain online, and a number copied from a previous application may no longer apply.

How long does Indian passport renewal take?

VFS publishes a minimum of 10 days for fresh and renewal passport applications in the UK. Treat that as a minimum, not a promised delivery date. Appointment availability, verification, requests for documents and return delivery affect when you have the passport in your hands.

The High Commission's passport information page states that police verification is mandatory in reissue cases. Give a complete, accurate Indian address and the contact details requested on the form.

If travel is urgent, check the mission's Tatkaal passport guidance before selecting that service. Eligibility and additional evidence matter. Paying an urgent-service fee should not be treated as a guarantee that a passport will arrive before a booked flight.

Address changes, expired passports and children's applications

A UK residential address on your application is not automatically the address that can be printed in your Indian passport. The High Commission describes limited circumstances in which a UK address may be permitted, including ILR and evidence that no permanent Indian address exists. Read the address guidance before requesting this change.

If your passport has already expired, use the instructions for its expiry period. For a passport expired for more than three years, the High Commission requests a declaration explaining the late renewal.

For a child, use the under-18 checklist linked on the VFS page. Do not substitute the adult list. Lost, stolen or damaged passports also require the relevant replacement procedure.

After renewal: update your UKVI account before travelling

Once the new passport arrives, check its personal details immediately. If you hold a UK eVisa, follow the UK government's instructions for updating your UKVI account with the new passport. Outdated details can cause travel delays.

The UK government says you cannot change passport or travel-document details through that service while waiting for a visa application decision. If this applies to you, follow the official help route rather than creating another account.

Check the travel records that still use the old passport number, including any upcoming visa application. For a European trip, our guide to Schengen travel with a UK eVisa explains why UK immigration status and destination entry permission are separate checks.

When you are ready to plan your next trip, explore Flyinbird's Schengen visa guidance or contact the team about your travel visa requirements. Passport reissue remains with the Indian authorities and their official submission provider.
