Do I Need a Schengen Visa if I Have a UK eVisa?
Have a UK eVisa and planning a European trip? Learn how your passport nationality, UK residence status and travel plans affect whether you need a Schengen visa.

A UK eVisa does not, by itself, let you visit the Schengen Area. Whether you need a Schengen visa depends mainly on the passport you travel with, your reason for visiting and any exemption that applies. Your UK residence status matters separately when you apply from the UK.
If you live in Britain and are planning a weekend in Paris or a holiday in Italy, it is easy to confuse these two sets of rules. Check your permission to visit your destination and your permission to return to the UK before booking.
What does a UK eVisa actually prove?
A UK eVisa is an online record of your immigration status and its conditions. It may show, for example, permission to work or study, or indefinite leave to remain. You access it through your UK Visas and Immigration account.
It records your position in the UK. It does not give you British citizenship or turn your passport into a British passport. Changing from a physical residence document to a digital record does not create a new right to visit another country. UK government: what an eVisa is.
Your passport nationality is the starting point
Two neighbours with valid UK immigration status can face different visa requirements for the same European holiday.
For an ordinary short tourist visit, an Indian or Pakistani passport holder will generally need a Schengen visa. A Canadian passport holder generally qualifies for visa-free short visits, subject to the applicable entry conditions. Those differences come from the nationality rules, not from holding a UK eVisa.
These are examples, not a complete eligibility list. Special travel documents and exemptions can change the answer. Check the official requirements for the passport you intend to use. EU nationality-based visa rules.
A full British citizen passport generally allows short visa-free visits to Schengen countries for permitted purposes, within the 90-days-in-any-180-days limit. That does not automatically permit work or a longer stay. British citizens do not need a UK eVisa. UK government: France entry requirements, UK government: travelling with an eVisa.
UK residence and Schengen entry: two separate checks
| What you need to establish | What to check |
|---|---|
| Your UK immigration status | Your eVisa record and the conditions of your permission |
| Whether you need a Schengen visa | Passport nationality, travel document, purpose and applicable exemptions |
| Whether you can apply from the UK | Legal residence and the relevant consulate’s instructions |
| Whether you can return to the UK | Valid UK permission and correct passport details in your UKVI account |
Having a UK Student, Skilled Worker, Graduate or family visa does not automatically remove a nationality-based Schengen visa requirement. Nor does indefinite leave to remain make someone a British citizen. Treat the European entry check separately from your UK status check.
Can I apply for a Schengen visa from the UK?
The usual rule is to apply through the appropriate consulate covering the place where you legally reside. If you are legally resident in the UK, that will normally mean applying here, following the destination’s instructions.
Simply being in the UK as a visitor is different. The Visa Code allows applications from legally present non-residents where there is justification, but you should check acceptance with the consulate before arranging an appointment.
For a multi-country trip, the correct country is your main destination by length or purpose of stay. First entry is the fallback when no main destination can be identified; do not choose a country only because its appointments look easier to obtain. EU Visa Code, Articles 5 and 6.

How do I show my UK status when applying?
Follow the current checklist issued by your destination’s consulate or authorised application centre. If it requests proof of UK immigration status, check which eVisa evidence it accepts and whether it requires a share code or a printed status record.
UK government lets you view your status and generate a share code to let another person check it. Different purposes can require different share-code options. Do not assume an old BRP number, a screenshot or any share code will satisfy every application form. UK government: view your eVisa and prove your status.
What else should I prepare?
Your UK status evidence is only one part of the application. Typical supporting documents include your passport, application form, photograph, accommodation and itinerary evidence, financial documents and travel medical insurance. The exact checklist depends on the destination and your circumstances.
You can usually lodge an application up to six months before travel and should normally submit at least 15 days beforehand. Leave additional time for appointments and preparation: processing can take longer than the usual 15 days, extending to 45 days in some cases. European Commission: applying for a Schengen visa.

Before travelling, check your return to the UK
Make sure your UKVI account contains the passport you will travel with and that your eVisa details are correct. Your passenger details should match the information held in your account. Errors can cause difficulties when a carrier checks your permission to return.
If you renew your passport, update your UKVI account before travelling. Check the destination’s own entry rules too; a correct UK immigration record cannot replace them. UK government: travel with your eVisa.

Frequently asked questions
Can I travel to France with only my UK eVisa?
Not on that basis alone. Check whether your passport qualifies for visa-free entry or whether you need a Schengen visa. Your UK eVisa does not replace that check.
Does indefinite leave to remain remove the need for a Schengen visa?
No. ILR is UK immigration status, not British citizenship. You still need to check the rules for your passport and any applicable exemption.
Is a UK eVisa share code the same as a Schengen visa?
No. A share code allows someone to check your UK status. It is not permission to enter the Schengen Area.
What if I have an EU family-member document or another special status?
Ask the destination’s authorities to check your exact document and journey. Specific exemptions may apply; do not assume every UK residence document qualifies.
