A few days in Lisbon, a week on the Algarve or a visit to family in Porto can be easy to plan until you reach the visa question. If you live in the UK, the answer depends on your passport and immigration circumstances, not simply where your flight departs.

This guide explains how to apply for a Portugal Schengen visa from the UK for a short holiday or family visit. It covers the UK submission route, documents, fees and the checks to make before booking an appointment. Official guidance was checked on 5 October 2026.

Do you need a visa to visit Portugal from the UK?

British citizens travelling on a full British citizen passport can normally visit Portugal without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the Schengen area. The UK government's Portugal entry guidance explains the conditions for these travellers.

For other passport holders, check the nationality rules and any exemption that applies to your circumstances. A UK eVisa does not automatically provide visa-free entry to Portugal. If you already hold a Schengen visa, check its territory, dates, permitted stay and remaining entries before assuming you need another.

Our guide to Schengen travel with a UK eVisa explains why UK residence and permission to enter Europe are separate checks. This article concerns short visits, not moving to Portugal or choosing a national residence visa.

When should you apply through Portugal?

Portugal should be the correct destination country for your application. For an ordinary holiday across several Schengen countries, compare where you will spend the most time. If there is no main destination, the first-entry rule may apply. The purpose of a visit can also determine the main destination.

For example, a sightseeing trip with six nights in Portugal and three in Spain points to Portugal as the main destination. Flying into Lisbon for one night before a week in Spain does not, by itself, make Portugal the right consulate.

Use your real itinerary. Choosing a country only because an appointment appears easier to find can leave the application inconsistent with the trip. Read the European Commission's Schengen application guidance and our guide to choosing where to apply.

Where to submit your application in the UK

The VFS Portugal UK page describes submission through London, Manchester or Edinburgh according to your residential jurisdiction. Check its county lists before choosing a centre. VFS receives applications; the Portuguese consular authorities make the decision.

Ordinary applications are made in your country of legal residence. The UK route has restrictions for people visiting the UK on a short-stay visa, with essential-travel exceptions subject to the mission's assessment. Do not assume that being physically in the UK makes you eligible for the tourist route.

Keep the visa category clear too. A hotel holiday and a visit where you stay with relatives may require different supporting arrangements.

Portugal Schengen visa documents for UK residents

Start with the current Portugal UK Schengen checklist. For a standard application, prepare:

  • A completed, signed application, recent photograph and personal statement.
  • Your passport and required copies. It must have two blank pages, have been issued within the last ten years and remain valid for three months after leaving Schengen.
  • UK residence evidence, including a digital share-code printout where applicable. The checklist requires permission valid for at least one month after your return.
  • Transport and accommodation evidence covering the full trip.
  • Travel medical insurance covering all Schengen countries and your stay, with at least €30,000 cover for medical emergencies and repatriation.
  • Three months of bank statements and the occupation or sponsorship evidence relevant to your circumstances.

The checklist includes separate instructions for children and qualifying family members. Read the section that fits your application rather than adding documents from another category.

As a practical preparation step, compare names and dates across the whole file. A hotel reservation for different dates from your transport booking is worth resolving before your appointment.

How to show your funds and travel plans

The UK checklist states a financial reference of €75 per entry plus €40 per day. For one entry and seven days, that calculation is €355. It is a reference amount, not a complete holiday budget or a guarantee of approval. Sponsorship has its own evidence requirements.

Budget for your actual trip. Accommodation, transport and activities may cost more than a minimum calculation suggests. Keep any explanation of who pays consistent with the bank records and invitation.

For a stay with family or friends, use the host-document instructions in the checklist. An informal message saying you can stay is not a substitute for the specified evidence.

A useful personal statement answers simple questions: why Portugal, why these dates, where you will stay and what brings you back after the visit. Keep it specific to your circumstances.

How to apply for a Portugal visa from the UK

1. Confirm the route and prepare the file

Check your visa need, the destination rule and your consular area first. Then follow the form and document instructions linked from the official VFS page. Print and sign the application where required.

Create a short list of items still missing before you book travel around an assumed submission date. Employer letters, host paperwork and suitable insurance can take time to arrange.

2. Book the correct appointment

Use the official booking route linked from VFS. Its UK guidance requires in-person submission by appointment, including for children. Follow the biometric instructions for your circumstances; exemptions from fingerprint collection do not necessarily remove the submission requirement.

Save the confirmation and read it carefully. An appointment at the wrong centre or for the wrong service can disrupt the application even when the documents are ready.

3. Attend and follow the return arrangements

Bring the application and documents in the required format. Keep your receipt and use the tracking and passport-return instructions provided at submission. Check how the passport will be returned before leaving.

If further information is requested, respond accurately. Paying for an optional service does not give you control over the consular decision.

Portugal Schengen visa fees from the UK

The standard fees are shown below. Reduced fees and exemptions can apply according to nationality or circumstances.

ApplicantStandard visa fee
Adult€90
Child aged 6 to under 12€45
Child under 6No standard visa fee

The VFS UK tourist page lists a £32.85 service fee per application in addition to the visa fee. The visa charge is collected in pounds at the applicable exchange rate. Confirm the current total and any delivery or optional-service costs before paying.

A service quote should make clear which charges it includes. Government fees, VFS charges and independent preparation support are separate items; do not compare headline prices without checking the breakdown.

When to apply and how long processing takes

The general application window is no earlier than six months and at least 15 days before the journey. Normal Schengen processing is 15 days, with examination extending to 45 days in some cases. These are not a promise that you will have your passport back by a chosen flight date.

Build your plan around three stages: finding an appointment, the application being assessed and the passport being returned. Leave a sensible margin for each. Check cancellation conditions before committing to travel expenses.

Checks before you travel

Once the passport returns, check the visa's dates, number of entries and permitted duration. A multiple-entry visa does not give unlimited days in Schengen. Count previous visits as well as the proposed trip.

Keep your itinerary, accommodation and supporting records accessible during travel. If the application is refused, read the reasons and appeal instructions supplied with the decision rather than submitting the same file unchanged.

Frequently asked questions

Do British citizens need a Schengen visa for Portugal?

British citizens on a full British citizen passport can normally visit without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period across Schengen, subject to entry requirements. Different rules apply to longer stays or work.

Can I travel to Portugal with only a UK eVisa?

A UK eVisa does not automatically permit entry to Portugal. Check the visa rules for your passport and any exemption that applies. Your UK status and your Schengen entry permission are separate matters.

Can I apply through Portugal if I will also visit Spain?

Use the destination rules for your actual itinerary. Portugal should be the sole or main destination; if there is no main destination, the first-entry rule may apply. Do not choose Portugal only because an appointment is available.

Where do UK residents submit a Portugal visa application?

VFS lists London, Manchester and Edinburgh submission centres with consular jurisdiction based on where you live. Check the current county lists and booking instructions before selecting a centre.

Does paying for a premium appointment guarantee a Portugal visa?

No. Optional services do not determine the consular decision. A complete application also does not guarantee approval, a particular visa duration or passport return before a booked flight.
