Applying from the UK

Ireland visa: the official route.

Who needs one, what it costs and how long it takes. Checked against official sources on 30 Sep 2026.

Who needs this visa

  • You live in the UK and hold a passport that needs a visa for Ireland, for example an Indian, Pakistani, Nigerian or South African passport.
  • Your trip is a holiday, business or family visit of up to 90 days.

Who usually doesn’t

  • British and Irish citizens, who travel freely within the Common Travel Area.
  • Citizens of the EU, EEA and Switzerland, and other visa free passports such as US, Canadian or Australian.
  • Some nationalities holding a valid UK short stay visa, under Ireland’s visa waiver or the British Irish Visa Scheme. We confirm whether either applies to you.

Your UK residence and nationality

  • Ireland isn’t in Schengen, and a UK residence permit on its own doesn’t replace an Irish visa for most nationalities.
  • Apply from the UK only if you’re legally resident here. You’ll usually show this with your UK eVisa (via a share code) or residence permit.
  • Your UK permission to stay should comfortably outlast your trip.

Getting an appointment

There’s no appointment: you apply online and post your documents.

Before you apply

Avoid the
common mistakes.

Most application problems are avoidable. These are the ones we see most often, and how we help you steer clear of them.

  1. 01

    Incomplete documentation

A single missing document can delay an application or raise questions about it.

We check your file against the official checklist before you submit.

  2. 02

    Incorrect travel dates

Dates that don’t line up across bookings, insurance and the form are easy to miss.

We cross check dates across every document.

  3. 03

    Information inconsistencies

Names, addresses or employment details that differ from one document to the next.

We review your details for consistency, line by line.

  4. 04

    Missing supporting evidence

A form on its own doesn’t always explain your circumstances or purpose of travel.

We help you identify evidence that supports your trip.

  5. 05

    Poorly prepared application

A disorganised file is harder to assess, however strong the application behind it.

We help you present everything clearly and in order.

frequently asked questions.

Still have a question? Our team can talk through your trip and your circumstances.

Speak to an expert

It depends on your nationality and any exemption that applies. A UK residence permit does not normally replace an Irish visa for visa-required travellers. British citizens do not need a visit visa. Check your passport and UK permission before planning a Dublin trip.

A Schengen visa does not itself give permission to visit Ireland. Ireland has its own visa rules, so you need to check whether your passport requires an Irish visa or qualifies for an exemption. Do not include Ireland as if it were another Schengen stop.

The Short-Stay Visa Waiver Programme is for specified nationalities with eligible UK short-stay visas and other conditions. It does not generally cover long-term UK student or work residence permission. Check the exact programme rules rather than relying on the fact that you live in the UK.

If your passport needs a visa for a short visit, the usual route is a Short Stay C visa. Select the reason that matches your trip, such as tourism or visiting family and friends. Longer stays and other purposes need a different assessment.

Start with the official AVATS application and then follow the submission instructions for the office handling your case. Completing the online form alone does not finish the application: you must supply the required passport and supporting documents through the stated route.

You will usually need your application summary, passport, photographs, proof of UK residence, financial evidence and an explanation of your visit. Accommodation, employment or student documents and an invitation may also be needed. Check the official list, including requirements for originals and translations.

You can apply up to three months before travel. Processing can take several weeks, so start as soon as your plans are ready within that window. Check the current queue for the office handling your application before committing to travel.

The application normally requires your original passport as well as supporting documents. Follow the submission instructions from your application office, including any postal or service-centre arrangements. Plan for the time your passport will be unavailable and keep copies of the documents you submit.

Northern Ireland is part of the UK, so check UK entry permission separately. An Irish visa does not normally cover a UK visit. Specific schemes such as BIVS have conditions; do not assume they apply simply because you have an Irish visa.

The current Ireland page lists £99 per traveller for assistance. Any official visa and submission charges are separate, and some applicants qualify for an official fee exemption. We will confirm what applies before you pay.
