Applying from the UK

Germany visa: the official route.

Who needs one, what it costs and how long it takes. Checked against official sources on 30 Sep 2026.

Who needs this visa

  • You live in the UK and hold a passport that needs a Schengen visa, for example an Indian, Pakistani, Nigerian, Chinese or South African passport.
  • Your main destination is Germany: where you’ll spend the most nights, or where you enter the Schengen area if your stays are equal.
  • Your trip is up to 90 days in any 180 day period. Longer stays need a national visa.

Who usually doesn’t

  • British citizens, and citizens of the EU, EEA and Switzerland.
  • Other visa free passport holders, such as US, Canadian or Australian citizens, for stays of up to 90 days in 180.
  • Holders of a valid residence permit issued by a Schengen country.
  • Visa free travellers will need an ETIAS travel authorisation once the EU starts it.

Your UK residence and nationality

  • Your nationality decides whether you need a visa. Your UK status decides whether you can apply in the UK.
  • Apply here only if you’re legally resident in the UK. You’ll usually show this with your UK eVisa (via a share code) or residence permit.
  • Many consulates expect your UK permission to stay to last at least three months beyond your return. If it expires sooner, check with the consulate before you book.
  • If you’re only visiting the UK, you normally apply in the country where you live.
  • The German missions also accept applications from holders of a UK short term study visa.

Two different waits

Getting an appointment

How soon you get an appointment depends on TLScontact’s availability, which is tightest in summer and around school holidays. You can apply up to six months before you travel, and no later than 15 days before.

Processing after you apply

Once you’ve attended, the consulate usually decides within 15 calendar days. This can extend to 45 days if it needs more documents or checks.

Before you apply

Avoid the
common mistakes.

Most application problems are avoidable. These are the ones we see most often, and how we help you steer clear of them.

  1. 01

    Incomplete documentation

A single missing document can delay an application or raise questions about it.

We check your file against the official checklist before you submit.

  2. 02

    Incorrect travel dates

Dates that don’t line up across bookings, insurance and the form are easy to miss.

We cross check dates across every document.

  3. 03

    Information inconsistencies

Names, addresses or employment details that differ from one document to the next.

We review your details for consistency, line by line.

  4. 04

    Missing supporting evidence

A form on its own doesn’t always explain your circumstances or purpose of travel.

We help you identify evidence that supports your trip.

  5. 05

    Poorly prepared application

A disorganised file is harder to assess, however strong the application behind it.

We help you present everything clearly and in order.

frequently asked questions.

Speak to an expert

It depends on your passport, not just your UK address. British citizens usually do not need a visa for a short holiday in Germany. If your nationality requires a Schengen visa, a UK residence permit or eVisa does not normally replace it. We can check the route for your passport and UK status.

Yes. The German missions in London and Edinburgh have different jurisdictions, and your place of residence determines the appropriate mission or visa centre. Check your district before booking rather than choosing whichever centre appears to have an earlier slot.

Germany’s UK guidance currently describes waiting lists for some short-stay categories through TLScontact in London and Manchester. Follow the official process for your category. Joining a waiting list is not a booked appointment, so leave extra time before travel.

Some passport holders need an airport transit visa even if they remain airside. If you leave the international transit area or your route involves entering Schengen, different permission may be needed. Check Germany’s transit guidance using your nationality, UK status and complete flight route.

Apply for the visit purpose that matches your plans. You may need an invitation, your host’s address and evidence of who is paying for the trip, rather than just hotel bookings. Use the German checklist for a family or friends visit so you prepare the right supporting documents.

A tourist visa is for a visit, not permission to take a job. If you plan to work, tell us before starting an application so the correct visa or residence route can be checked. Business meetings and employment are different travel purposes.

You will usually need your passport, application form, photo, proof of UK residence, travel medical insurance, itinerary, accommodation and evidence you can afford the trip. Documents about your job, studies or sponsor may also be needed. We will help you match the file to the official Germany checklist.

The standard short-stay Schengen visa fee is €90 for an adult. Reduced fees or exemptions apply to some applicants. The visa centre may charge a separate service fee, and Flyinbird’s optional assistance is another cost. Check the current fee in pounds and what is included before paying.
