How soon you get an appointment depends on VFS Global’s availability, which is tightest in summer and around school holidays. You can apply up to six months before you travel, and no later than 15 days before.
Once you’ve attended, the consulate usually decides within 15 calendar days. This can extend to 45 days if it needs more documents or checks.
Always check the official pages before you apply. They take priority over this guide.

How we help
Appointments are booked through the official visa application centre, which sets its own availability. We help you reach that step organised and prepared.
Flyinbird doesn’t control appointment availability or visa decisions. Slots are released by the visa centre and can vary by season and location.
Speak to an expertBefore you apply
Most application problems are avoidable. These are the ones we see most often, and how we help you steer clear of them.
A single missing document can delay an application or raise questions about it.
We check your file against the official checklist before you submit.
Dates that don’t line up across bookings, insurance and the form are easy to miss.
We cross check dates across every document.
Names, addresses or employment details that differ from one document to the next.
We review your details for consistency, line by line.
A form on its own doesn’t always explain your circumstances or purpose of travel.
We help you identify evidence that supports your trip.
A disorganised file is harder to assess, however strong the application behind it.
We help you present everything clearly and in order.
Good to know
Still have a question? Our team can talk through your trip and your circumstances.
Speak to an expertIt depends on your passport, not just your UK address. British citizens usually do not need a visa for a short holiday in Italy. If your nationality requires a Schengen visa, a UK residence permit or eVisa does not normally replace it. We can check the route for your passport and UK status.
Check this before booking. The Italian Consulate in London requires your UK residence permission to remain valid for at least three months after your return from the Schengen area. If your permission is close to expiry, resolve that issue before relying on your proposed dates.
The London consulate’s guidance requires applicants to submit in person through the relevant appointment route. Flyinbird can help prepare the file, but you should plan to attend. Check the instructions for your consular district rather than assuming previous fingerprints remove the attendance requirement.
Use the family or friends visit checklist rather than the tourism checklist if staying with relatives is the purpose of the trip. Explain your host, accommodation and who pays. An invitation supports the visit but does not replace the rest of your application.
Use the appointment route linked by the Italian consulate, normally through VFS Global. Your UK address determines the consular district that handles your application, so check that before choosing a centre. A convenient appointment in another district may not be suitable.
No. One suitable visa covers a trip within Italy. Your accommodation and travel plans should show the cities you will visit and where you will stay. Make sure all your dates fall within the visa’s validity and permitted stay.
You will usually need your passport, application form, photo, proof of UK residence, travel medical insurance, itinerary, accommodation and evidence you can afford the trip. Documents about your job, studies or sponsor may also be needed. We will help you match the file to the official Italy checklist.
The standard short-stay Schengen visa fee is €90 for an adult. Reduced fees or exemptions apply to some applicants. The visa centre may charge a separate service fee, and Flyinbird’s optional assistance is another cost. Check the current fee in pounds and what is included before paying.
