How soon you get an appointment depends on VFS Global’s availability, which is tightest in summer and around school holidays. You can apply up to six months before you travel, and no later than 15 days before.
Once you’ve attended, the consulate usually decides within 15 calendar days. This can extend to 45 days if it needs more documents or checks.
Always check the official pages before you apply. They take priority over this guide.

How we help
Appointments are booked through the official visa application centre, which sets its own availability. We help you reach that step organised and prepared.
Flyinbird doesn’t control appointment availability or visa decisions. Slots are released by the visa centre and can vary by season and location.
Speak to an expertBefore you apply
Most application problems are avoidable. These are the ones we see most often, and how we help you steer clear of them.
A single missing document can delay an application or raise questions about it.
We check your file against the official checklist before you submit.
Dates that don’t line up across bookings, insurance and the form are easy to miss.
We cross check dates across every document.
Names, addresses or employment details that differ from one document to the next.
We review your details for consistency, line by line.
A form on its own doesn’t always explain your circumstances or purpose of travel.
We help you identify evidence that supports your trip.
A disorganised file is harder to assess, however strong the application behind it.
We help you present everything clearly and in order.
Good to know
Still have a question? Our team can talk through your trip and your circumstances.
Speak to an expertIt depends on your passport, not just your UK address. British citizens usually do not need a visa for a short holiday in Portugal. If your nationality requires a Schengen visa, a UK residence permit or eVisa does not normally replace it. We can check the route for your passport and UK status.
Your UK address matters. The Portugal UK instructions divide applicants between the London and Manchester consular jurisdictions, with different permitted submission centres. Check which district covers your address before booking; an available slot elsewhere may not be suitable.
Madeira and the Azores are part of Portugal, so a suitable Schengen visa can cover a short holiday there. Include those stays in your itinerary and check the visa’s dates and permitted days. A connection outside Schengen may require separate permission.
No. VFS receives the application and may collect biometrics, but the responsible Portuguese consulate makes the decision. Paying for an appointment, courier delivery or optional assistance does not purchase approval or a guaranteed processing time.
No. One suitable Portugal visa covers visits to both cities. Your itinerary should show your accommodation in each place and how you plan to travel between them. Keep the dates consistent across your application, bookings and insurance.
Usually, yes, with a standard Schengen visa covering both countries. Include the Spain part of the trip when you apply. If Spain becomes your main destination, the application may need to go through Spain instead of Portugal.
You will usually need your passport, application form, photo, proof of UK residence, travel medical insurance, itinerary, accommodation and evidence you can afford the trip. Documents about your job, studies or sponsor may also be needed. We will help you match the file to the official Portugal checklist.
The standard short-stay Schengen visa fee is €90 for an adult. Reduced fees or exemptions apply to some applicants. The visa centre may charge a separate service fee, and Flyinbird’s optional assistance is another cost. Check the current fee in pounds and what is included before paying.
