Egypt visa: the official route.

Who needs one, what it costs and how long it takes. Checked against official sources on 30 Sep 2026.

Who needs this visa

  • Most travellers from the UK, British citizens included.
  • Your trip is a holiday, including Red Sea resorts and Nile cruises.

Who usually doesn’t

  • Some nationalities can buy a visa on arrival instead, British citizens among them.
  • Visitors staying only in the South Sinai resorts, such as Sharm el Sheikh, for up to 15 days can get a free entry stamp. It doesn’t cover travel elsewhere in Egypt.

Your UK residence and nationality

  • Your nationality decides whether you can get a visa on arrival or must arrange one in advance.

Speak to an expert

Before you apply

Avoid the
common mistakes.

Most application problems are avoidable. These are the ones we see most often, and how we help you steer clear of them.

  1. 01

    Incomplete documentation

A single missing document can delay an application or raise questions about it.

We check your file against the official checklist before you submit.

  2. 02

    Incorrect travel dates

Dates that don’t line up across bookings, insurance and the form are easy to miss.

We cross check dates across every document.

  3. 03

    Information inconsistencies

Names, addresses or employment details that differ from one document to the next.

We review your details for consistency, line by line.

  4. 04

    Missing supporting evidence

A form on its own doesn’t always explain your circumstances or purpose of travel.

We help you identify evidence that supports your trip.

  5. 05

    Poorly prepared application

A disorganised file is harder to assess, however strong the application behind it.

We help you present everything clearly and in order.

Speak to an expert

Usually, yes. British citizen passport holders can normally arrange a tourist visa in advance or obtain one on arrival at eligible airports. A limited South Sinai resort exemption may apply to a short qualifying stay. Your destination and route matter, not just the length of the holiday.

For British citizen passport holders arriving at Sharm el-Sheikh, a free entry stamp can cover qualifying resort stays of less than 15 days in Sharm el-Sheikh, Dahab, Nuweiba or Taba. It does not cover every Egypt itinerary. Check separately if you will go beyond the permitted area or stay longer.

Yes, you need the appropriate entry visa rather than relying on the limited South Sinai resort stamp. A trip to Cairo changes the route beyond that exemption. Arrange the right permission before the excursion and check how it applies to your passport.

An eVisa lets an eligible traveller arrange the document before departure. Visa on arrival can suit eligible passports and arrival points, but it is not available to everyone. Check your nationality and airport first; neither option guarantees admission at the border.

No. The official eVisa route is available to the nationalities listed by Egypt. A UK residence permit alone does not put every passport on that list. If you are not eligible, check the consular visa route before booking travel.

You need a passport that meets the validity rule and details of your trip and accommodation. The official entry checklist includes a passport valid for at least six months from arrival, your eVisa printout and itinerary. Further supporting evidence can depend on the purpose of travel.

Apply ahead of your trip and leave time for corrections or further checks. Flyinbird’s current guidance recommends at least a week, but that is not a guaranteed decision window. Check the official portal’s latest instructions before choosing your application date.

Yes. The official portal lists an eVisa printout among the arrival documents. Carry it with your passport and keep your itinerary and accommodation details available. Make sure the passport number and personal details match before you travel.

A single-entry visa is intended for one entry. If your itinerary leaves Egypt and returns, check a multiple-entry option and its conditions before applying. Do not assume unused days make a single-entry visa reusable.

The current Egypt page lists £99 per traveller for assistance. The government visa charge is separate and depends on the route and entry type. Check the current official fee rather than assuming an eVisa and visa on arrival cost the same.
